Board and care is an older term that is being replaced by the term residential care facility for the elderly (RCFE). More than 90% of residential care homes are licensed for six or fewer residents housed in a private residential home setting. Residents of RCFEs are often debilitated either physically or mentally. There are usually one to two caregivers on site 24 hours a day, and the settings tend to be homey and humble. RCFEs are licensed and highly regulated. In California, their regulations fall under a statute referred to as Title 22.RelevanceBoard and care tends to be much less expensive than an assisted living facility.Related ResourcesView a copy of the California RCFE regulations.
