Dialysis

The process of cleansing the blood by passing it through a special machine. Dialysis is necessary when the kidneys are not able to filter the blood. There are two types of dialysis: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Peritoneal dialysis is done through the patient’s own abdominal membrane and can be done at home. Hemodialysis involves putting in a catheter that connects an artery to a vein via a dialysis machine and must be done at a specialized center.RelevanceKidney dialysis is a life-support treatment and without it toxins would build up. Patients often need dialysis several times a week, which takes several hours each time. A third type of dialysis, CVVH (continuous hemo-hemo dialysis), can be performed in the ICU for very sick people whose organs are failing due to severe illness.
